Walking your dog in the rain

Rain, rain go away

I’m sure the saying “there is no wrong weather;  just wrong clothing” is a perfectly valid one.  However, give me a good book and a mug of hot chocolate any day of the week over trundling in a muddy field with the dogs.

But of course, they need to do their business.  Even if it’s pouring it down.

So, do we need to keep an eye on the daily weather forecast to dodge the showers?  Should your dog wear a coat?  Is it at all OK to take your dog out when it’s raining?

Taking your dog out in the rain

A lot of dogs absolutely love the rain!

Thai shares my sentiment and turns her nose up at the rain.  Simba is the opposite and is happy seeking out the biggest and messiest puddle she can find.  So before you head out it’s worth remembering the following tips.

Keep them warm

A dog with a lot of fur will not feel too cold when walking out in the rain,  provided they keep on the move and they’re not standing around for long periods of time.  After all, you’ve got that hot chocolate to get home to 🙂

A little bit of rain should not affect them and will probably not even seep through to their skin (provided your dog is of the “furry” variety).   However, if it’s raining cats and dogs (sorry, I couldn’t resist..) it’s likely they will get considerably wet and cold.

Make sure you’ve got a towel at the ready to dry them off as soon as you get in the door.

Every dog is different

Labradors and New Foundland Dogs absolutely love the rain.  However, some other breeds are not too keen.  You will know your dog’s likes and dislikes.   Is it a passing shower?  You may be able to hang on for a bit.   Has the rain set in?  Get ready to brave the elements and make things as enjoyable for you and your pooch.

Doggies see, doggies do

Dogs do pick up on their owner’s emotions.   Do you hate a rainstorm?  Your dog is likely to pick up on your behaviour.   If you get them used to walking in the rain from when they are a puppy, they’re less likely to cause a fuss later in life.

It’s noisy

For some dogs it’s not the feel of the rain, but the sound that is causing them to be anxious.   Dogs with a sensitivity to noise are likely to want to run a mile at the sound of rain on the roof, or a good downpour.

What can you do to keep your dog happy in the rain?

You may be able to find an area that is a bit sheltered.  Walk under the trees if the downpour is not too heavy.

Putting a coat on your dog will keep their fur dry.  There are some great designs on the market so your dog can look the part even if they look like a drowned rat 🙂  However, if your dog does have a sensitivity to sound, the noise of the rain on a vinyl coat may cause them to freak out, so be aware.

Doggie rain boots will keep their paws dry.   However, you may have a challenge on your hands getting them to wear them.  Please see our earlier article here

Nice and cozy

Get them dried and nice and cozy as soon as you get in the door.  Drying them off completely with a towel with avoid your dog getting a cold and feeling unwell.

If you really want to get cozy with your dog on a rainy day, Etsy do some awesome doggie robes in various colours and sizes.

Check out their website here to chose matching robes to allow you both get cozy and cuddle up after your rainy walkies

.. now where’s my chocolate? …
